On May 29, "The 110th Anniversary of Chinese University Journals & Academic Periodical Summit Forum" organized by National Research Society for University Social Sciences Journals and undertaken by the Editorial Office of Soochow University Journal was held at our university. Nearly 200 people including leaders and experts in the journal circle attended the meeting, commemorating the 110th anniversary of Chinese university journals and discussing the integration and development of traditional media and new media in the new era. Tian Xiaoming, Vice-president of Soochow University, presided over the opening ceremony.
President Xiong Sidong first expressed welcome and thanks on behalf of Soochow University to the leaders and representatives present at the meeting. He pointed out that the Journal of Learned Raft founded in 1906, predecessor of Soochow University Journal, as the first university journal in China, is an important coordinate in China's education history, academic history and journal history. In the whole development history, the journal and the university have complemented each other. The journal has played a significant role in promoting disciplinary construction, talent cultivation, cultural transmission etc. "In the new normal, with continuous emerging of new media, academic periodicals' development is facing new opportunities and challenges. How university journals will follow the tide and become stronger will be an important topic we need to further discuss and solve," he stressed. He hoped university journals truly become an important platform for spreading knowledge, exchanging ideas and leading academy so as to facilitate innovation-oriented national construction.
After the opening ceremony, the "Academic Periodical Summit Forum" themed "Inheritance, integration and innovation" was held. The present experts made a significant special speech respectively.
Vice-president Tian Xiaoming delivered a special speech under the title of "Thinking and Exploration: Soochow University Journal's Development Road". He introduced Soochow University Journal's history from such three aspects as the dilemma the journal is facing, the journal's exploration and the effects achieved to the present representatives and shared his feelings and experiences concerning his growth together with the journal. He hoped the present representatives can cherish university journals and endure loneliness and he expressed his expectation and hope to the goal of "revitalize Soochow University Journal".
At last, Ye Juanli, Vice-chairman of National Research Society for University Social Sciences Journals, made the closing speech. She summarized the meeting with four words – "pity", "luck", "confusion" and "hope". "This is a navigating meeting for the journal circle in the new media era. It makes the future development of journal clear and people engaging in journals see hope. I'm looking forward to seeing you all at Soochow University at the '120th Anniversary of Chinese University Journals'," she said.
